Chapter Eleven

Lorcan

The day before, I’d quickly encouraged Michael out of the house, using poor excuses at how uncomfortable he’d clearly made Rogan and for overstepping a boundary by coming to pressurize me. I’d not taken the time to message my band mates to suggest we meet to discuss a future without Michael. Instead, I’d chased after Rogan. Shocked at what I’d heard, I’d done a little overstepping—okay, a lot of overstepping—by slipping into his room without invitation at the sound of music.

It was Rogan’s shocked expression and mouth covering that kept me from voicing more the day before. Why he’d not pursued a career in music was easy to understand with the action of a hand covering his mouth and the following look of vulnerability. Amy, and her perfect timing, had appeared and broken the tension that fizzled between us. It was her excitement that clued me in that she knew Rogan’s secret when she’d seen his guitar case. Had he played for her?

All the time he’d worked for me, not once had he mentioned he could play a musical instrument, never mind that he had a beautiful singing voice. Rich and melodic, its dreamy quality captured one’s attention fully. Talking about Michael and how he made Rogan feel got pushed to the back seat as I’d discovered yet one more thing we had in common. The list accompanied my feelings, which had, over time—now I’d explored them—developed from employee to friends to…

I sucked in a breath at how boyfriends weren’t exactly where my head and heart were at. It was scary to think about a future without Rogan in it, and that was where I was at. I needed Rogan to catch up with me. How to make that happen?

I needed a little help with it.

“Daddy, are you going to help me or stare at the wall? Is there something on it?”

“Of course I’m going to help you, but first…” I growled. “The beardy monster wants to play.”

Amy’s contagious laughter burst out of her as she scrambled to get away before I swept her up into my arms and nuzzled my whiskers into her neck.

“No, beardy monster, it tickles,” she said breathlessly through her laughter, squirming in my arms.

“I can’t hear you,” I growled through my laughter before putting her in the bath I’d filled for her bedtime routine. One I made sure to be part of when I was home.

Water splashed in my direction as Amy gathered up the bubbles floating on the water and blew them up into the air as if to use them to fight me off. Her giggles increased when some landed on my bare forearms.

Kneeling fully on the bath towel I’d placed on the heated tiles, I leaned against the bath, making monster noises as I reached for the large sponge and bar of rainbow soap she loved.

“You need more practice to get the monster noises right. Maybe you should ask Ro to help you. He’s real good at them.”

I scooped up some bubbles and put them on her hair.
